October has been a busy month and there are plenty of things lined up for November. Exciting news hot off the press - the NDLR website has been shortlisted for the Eircom Spider awards with winners to be announced on the 18th of November so fingers crossed! - http://www.eircomspiders.ie/
The NDLR team has been busy preparing the 2010 Annual Report which has been submitted to the HEA showing massive activity from around the country, here are some of the highlights- http://www.ndlr.ie/services/ndlrhighlightsstatistics
147 Local Innovation Projects (LIPs) and 21 national projects have been developed. The number of resources in the repository has increased to 4,698 with over 29,000 downloads of resources! The NDLR training programme has engaged with over 1,400 of you across all partner institutions through 141 NDLR events and workshops.

The Eircom Spiders Awards are an annual event honouring Irish individuals and organisations for their outstanding achievements online and celebrating the successes of the Irish internet and digital media. The awards are judged by a prestigious panel of experts, comprised of leaders from industry, commerce, media and academia. The panel evaluates entries on a diverse range of judging criteria including content, structure & navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity as well as overall user experience. NDLR Resources of the Month

Title: Online videos and interactive presentations to support the teaching and learning of exercises and coaching drills used in the rehabilitation after sports injury.
Overview: This project is being led by Dr. Aoife Ní Mhuirí, Lecturer in Health and Leisure Studies at the Institute of Technology, Tralee in collaboration with expert reviewers at the Schools of Physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin and University of Limerick and the DEIS Department (Multimedia) at CIT.
This project is promoting collaboration and links between the disciplines of sports science/coaching and physiotherapy. The project team at IT Tralee (which comprises lecturers and students of the Health and Leisure and Multimedia Departments and staff of the Centre for Educational Development) are developing videos for use in illustrating to students best practice in exercise rehabilitation following sports injury. Collaboration with lecturers in TCD and UL schools of physiotherapy allows for assistance with choosing exercises and review and evaluation of materials developed.
The video footage produced will be packaged in an interactive online presentation using Articulate software which will support the learner in understanding the different phases of rehabilitation and developing functionally progressive rehabilitation programmes following injury to three specific areas of the body.

Dr. Tom Farrelly (Department of Humanities and Social Studies in IT Tralee) has been working on Blended Learning in Social Care Education for several years. As p[art of the LIPs initiative at IT Tralee, Tom has developed a number of RLRs and learning modules particularly focusing on research and community profiling skills. These RLRs have been incorporated into 5 modules (for both undergraduate and postgraduate and provide an interactive means of looking at core curriculum content but also include assessments that allow for independent self teaching/learning:

Dawn Duffin NLN will deliver a webinar on the topic of Learning Styles. Wednesday Nov, 10th, 1.10pm - 2pm
A SIF funded project on learning styles allowed students and lecturers to examine their learning and teaching styles and to apply that knowledge to the process of learning and teaching. Some of the results and conclusions drawn from the project are really interesting and innovative. This presentation will look at the rationale for a Learning Styles approach and provide some tips and tools to get you started on how it may benefit you.
Dawn Duffin Biography
Dawn Duffin is Head of Learning and Assessment Services, National Learning Network. Having held a variety of posts she is now a member of the Senior Management Team and leads the Department of Learning and Assessment Services. As a former teacher with special needs responsibilities, she is an advocate of inclusive education at all levels of society.
The Department of Learning and Assessment Services provides training, CPD, Psychological Assessment and a comprehensive range of support services within the Rehab Group and in a number of partnerships and projects with mainstream education providers such as CDVEC and the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. Having completed a Masters in Theoretical Linguistics in 1998, Dawn is currently undertaking doctoral research on inclusive education.

Dr Conor Carroll, Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick
Dr Conor Carroll is a lecturer in marketing at the University of Limerick. Conor is a prolific case study writer, has written over 65 published marketing case studies. He has won numerous accolades for his case study writing, winning national and international awards. He has presented case study research/writing seminars at Harvard Business School. Conor is the winner of the 2004 and 2009 Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Limerick, and has won other international teaching awards. Conor has been consistently nominated for UL Teaching Excellence Awards in Small, Medium and Large Class Size Categories. Areas of expertise include: Crisis Communications, Strategic Sales Management, Retailing, and Marketing.
Dr Patricia Kennon, Lecturer in English Literature, Froebel College of Education
Dr Patricia Kennon is a Lecturer in English Literature and the Coordinator of the Programme for Lifelong Learning at Froebel College of Education, Blackrock, Dublin. She is the co-editor of Inis: The Children’s Books Ireland Magazine, the secretary for the Irish Society for the Study of Children’s Literature and the President of iBbY Ireland, the national section of IBBY, an organization dedicated to promoting intercultural dialogue through children’s literature. She was a member of the judging panel for the Children’s Books Ireland Bisto Book of the Year Awards. Her research interests include gender and diversity issues in children’s literature and popular culture, visual culture and Victorian literature.
Dr Eilish McLoughlin, School of Physical Sciences, Dublin City University
Dr Eilish McLoughlin’s interest in science began while in school in Westport, Co. Mayo and she completed a BSc and a PhD in Physics (Nanotechnology) and has been an academic in DCU for the past ten years. She is co-ordinator of the FP7 funded project ESTABLISH, which focuses on supporting teachers to adopt an inquiry based approach to teaching science at second level while involving industrial partners as key stakeholders. She is Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) in Dublin City University, which undertakes research to inform and enhance the teaching and learning of science and mathematics at and across all educational levels. Eilish is married to Ger, also a Physicist, and they have two sons Cian and Sean.
Dr Ann O’Shea, Mathematics Department, NUI Maynooth
Dr Ann O'Shea holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana and has been a lecturer in the Mathematics Department at NUI Maynooth since 1992. She established and is the director of the NUIM Mathematics Support Centre. She is course director of an MSc in Mathematics for Education, which is aimed at out-of-field teachers and is delivered in conjunction with the University of Cambridge. Her research interests lie in the area of Mathematics Education. With her collaborators and students she has studied mathematical literacy, affect in mathematics, the influence of high-stakes examinations, the effectiveness of mathematics support, and advanced mathematical thinking processes.
Dr Dagmar Stengel, Botany and Plant Science, NUI Galway
Dr Dagmar Stengel began her academic career in Biology at the University of Würzburg, Germany, before moving to Queen’s University Belfast to complete her undergraduate degree in Environmental Biology. There she also undertook her PhD in algal research before taking up a position at NUI Galway, where she was appointed to a permanent lectureship in Botany in 2003. Dagmar teaches 1st-4th year classes of all sizes, ranging from 5 to 350 students, and has supervised several MSc and PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Her undergraduate teaching in marine and plant science is strongly influenced by her research interests and activities in the application of algae in environmental research and biotechnology. By capturing students’ interest she encourages their own learning and development and the acquisition of transferable skills and competencies through the promotion of student engagement.

Call for papers for the 1st IDATER Conference on Graphicacy and Modelling. The Technology Education Research Group at the University of Limerick & The Design Education Research Group at Loughborough University are co-organising a conference on the 13/14 December

The first ever German competition of the DAAD and the German Embassy in Dublin for the Republic of Ireland takes place this year. It is titled "Give-Me-That-Spiel-(or-any-other-German-loanword)". The first prize is a DAAD Scholarship for a Summer School at a German University
The HEAnet National Networking Conference 2010 will take place on 10-12 November at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny. The HEAnet National Networking Conference is an annual event that attracts IT Service Managers, Senior Technical personnel and key academics and researchers from HEAnet's clientele of Universities and other Irish Third Level and Research Institutions
