Welcome to the January issue of the NDLR eNewsletter

We hope you have all had a lovely break and are feeling rested, fit and happy!

2010 has obviously been tough for morale, but we Irish Higher Education types are a resilient and creative bunch, so we are looking forward to engaging with you all in 2011 to fulfill our goals for the year and support you all in your endeavours!

NDLR Shortlisted for eGovernment Awards 2011

The NDLR has been shortlisted again! This time recognition has been given by the Ireland's eGovernment awards under the categories of Education and Open Source. Ireland's eGovernment Awards in association with Eircom, jointly run by the Public Sector Times newspaper and web usage and web strategy experts Elucidate, are now in the tenth year. They are the recognised benchmark for excellence in Irish eGovernment services and standards. The Awards raise awareness and recognise the innovators, developers, forward thinkers and experts who are pioneering the changes happening in how the Irish Government delivers services to its citizens. http://www.irishegovernmentawards.ie/shortlist-2011.htm
The Awards ceremony will be held on Friday, 11 March 2011

 

NDLR Partner Spotlight - DIT

One of the NDLR's 12 LInCs projects this year, MyRI (Measuring your Research Impact), will present a long paper at the 2011 LILAC conference to be held at the British Library and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE) in April. MyRI will also host a workshop at the LILAC event so that users can see the materials, how they can be selected and packaged in training and awareness scenarios and save them time. MyRI is a collaborative project of four Irish academic libraries (UCD, DCU, NUIM and DIT) to produce a set of materials to support bibliometrics training. NDLR at DIT Annual Showcase

The NDLR hosted a stand at the DIT Annual Showcase forTeaching & Learning which took place on 12th January in the Dublin Institute of Technology, Aungier Street. The DIT has 12 Local Innovation Projects in progress and is involved in 3 of the current LInCs projects.

UCD Announces successful NDLR Learning Innovation project applicants

The 2010 awards for the (NDLR funded) UCD Learning Innovation Projects is pleased to announce a number of funded initiatives for the coming year. Thanks are due to the myriad of stimulating and creative proposals that were received from the UCD community. We would like to congratulate the winners and we look forward to seeing the outcomes of their projects over the coming year. LInCS Project Title: Exercise to Music and Anatomy and Physiology Assessment Tools

Following on from their presentation of the “Strength and Conditioning” module at NDLR Fest 2010, the Sports Cop led by Cork IT are currently developing some additional rich learning resources.

To date, all of the video footage has been shot and the task of post editing for instructional purposes has commenced. For RLO1:  “Rich Media Learning Resources in the area of Exercise to Music, Level 1”, approx 15 routines (each with their own variations) were filmed in the GAA Stand Studio at Cork Institute of Technology. A group of 20 students from the Recreation and Leisure Course studied each of the routines prior to the shoot. On the day, a group of 6-8 students demonstrated the individual routines. UL Colloquium for Broadening the Curriculum

An interactive and informative event took place on 20th January for broadening the curriculum, and curriculum development at the University of Limerick. The colloquium brought together authoritative and experienced commentators, as well as providing a forum for discussing relevant challenges and issues. Speakers at the colloquium included:

Una Halligan, Expert on future skills needs in Ireland and Internationally
Prof Bryan McGregor, Leader of Curriculum Development at Aberdeen University
Tony Donohue, Head of Education and Innovation Policy, IBEC
Prof Melanie Walker, Prof of Human Capabilities at the University of Nottingham

- DEADLINE: 7TH FEBRUARY 2011

The Jennifer Burke Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning is awarded annually by the Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA) and Dublin City University (DCU). Click here for more information >>

- 11th DIVERSE (Developing Innovative Visual Educational Resources for Students Everywhere)

Annual Conference to be held in Dublin City University between the 28th and 30th of June 2011. The main goal for the conference is to enhance the use of visual media in teaching, learning and creative inquiry. http://diverse2011.dcu.ie/welcome.html

- NDLR hosted a stand at the DIT Annual Showcase for Teaching & Learning which took place on 12th January in DIT, Aungier Street. The DIT has 12 Local Innovation Projects in progress and is involved in 3 of the current LInCs projects.

- The DHO is proud to announce the expansion of the DRAPIer database.

- Building on the success of DRAPIer as a resource for Digital Humanities scholars in Irish Higher Education, DRAPIer will now facilitate the inclusion of digital collections from Irish Cultural Heritage Institutions. Moreover, institutions outside of the island of Ireland who host digital collections in the area of Irish studies may also have their collections listed in the database. This expanded mandate will better reflect, highlight and promote the wide interest in Irish cultural heritage at a global level.

- A paper for the MyRI Lincs project has been accepted for the 2011 LILAC conference at the British Library and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences(LSE) to be held in April this year. MyRI will also host workshops at the event.

-WIT Launches Project to Promote Online Self Awareness Among Students

The WIT Security Awareness project has been designed to help minimise the risks associated with the internet for young adults. In collaboration with Co. Kilkenny Vocational Education Committee – through Coláiste Pobail Osraí in Kilkenny – WIT has launched an innovative new project, funded by Campus Engage, which promotes self awareness among young people when online.
